A Place of honor, beauty and serenity

USAF Roundel

Roundel
The roundel, more commonly referred to as the insignia, dates from the early days of the Air Force and is used today on aircraft and missiles alike. It is immediately recognized by friend and foe as identifying the finest fighting forces in the world. In the memorial it represents the unifying foundation of the total force.

Memorial Tablets
Three monoliths will show the icons and symbols of the Air Force with text representative of the Air Force and its history in New Hampshire.

Our Memorial will be a permanent part of the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen which is visited by thousands of people each year. The cemetery is a serene and dignified resting place for those who have served their country and our beloved state. One of the most beautiful Veterans Cemeteries in the country, the site is the final resting place of hundreds of veterans and is visited by thousands of mourners, veterans groups and tourists each year. It is characteristically New Hampshire, and indicative of the high regard our citizens have for those who have served and those who serve.

Design Considerations
The watercolor concept above, by well known Portsmouth artist Denise Brown, shows the timeless elements incorporated by the Memorial Committee that clearly say “US AIR FORCE “. These include a timeless design that clearly says this is an AF Memorial. All AF components and antecedents and all personnel – officers, enlisted, and civilian –are honored. This unique Memorial will be a source of pride to service members and private citizens alike. The memorial will be built in two phases, with the main elements completed first and the spires added as funding permits soon after.

Three Spires
Three spires differing slightly in height soar over the memorial. The three spires are symbolic of many aspects of the Air Force because the number three occurs often in the Air Force. Visually they are reminiscent of a demonstration “bomb burst” or a missing man formation. In other areas the number three is found in such diverse context as the three core values, three squadrons in a wing, and three flights in a squadron.

Testimonial Markers
(Not Shown)
Testimonial markers will be placed near the memorial to provide permanent recognition of major Enabling Donors to the project. We expect that over time these markers will be viewed by thousands of visitors to the memorial who will long appreciate the Air Force, Veteran and Industry partnership that made this monument possible.
